Make: Playdough

Playdough is amazing! Its great for kids to build up the muscles in their hands which they will need for writing and small movements (fine motor skills), it also allows them to play with their creativity and can even be a wind down activity (you can also add essential oils to help with this).

Getting children involved in making the playdough brings a whole new element in. Children get to measure, mix and watch the dough come together (for my kids, the main joy is getting to choose their own colours!!)

I've tried lots of different ways to make playdough and this is by far the easiest and fuss free! This recipe originally came from The Imagination Tree who have hundreds of other amazing playdough recipes with different colours/smells and textures.

You will need

  • 2 cups plain flour

  • 2 tablespoons oil (we always use vegetable but others have tried it with baby oil or coconut oil)

  • 1/2 cup salt.

  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar.

  • 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (add a bit at a time)

  • Food colouring

Make it

  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl.

  • In a jug or bowl, add a few drops of the

food colouring to the water

  • Add the water to the dry ingredients a bit at a time until it seems about right.

  • Get your hands in and mix the dough.

  • If you need more water or food colouring, now is the time to add!

Get creative!

(If you want more than one colour, it is a lot easier to add the food colouring separately to the water, splitting up the plain dough once you have made it and adding in the colours in separate bowls)
