Experimenting with melting

This was a simple, 'we need to get out and take a break from online schooling' activity'. It goes without saying that you need to supervise children around flames/fire, however because the pan doesn't actually get too hot, it is actually quite safe for children to be near it.

We tried a few candles we'd had knocking around for a while (probably a birthday presents some years ago!). I chosen ones in metal tubs as I thought they would be best for the job. We then built a small cooker/shelter around it with stones. We wondered how to stack them and how they would shelter it from the breeze. Once we had the pan balanced, the girls went off to find snow to melt. It took a while for the pan to warm up but the girls began to collect grass and leaves to transform it into a potion. We were amazed to see how quickly it melted once it started, and of course, we had to cook some marshmallows over the candle once we had finished!!
