It snowed here last week. Thats no biggy for most people around the UK this time of year but our sea side town doesn't often get much of a look in on the cold white stuff (Icy winds we have in abundance!!)
So we have made the most of wondering and wandering in it, finding the drips on the shed that became icicles, getting to the beach really early to find frost on the sand, and jumping in icy puddles. We've played endlessly with snowmen, snow sculptures and snowball fights, we've had lots of fun.
But here is the greatest thing about play. Children are learning from it all the time! When we take time out to play and wonder, we find out all about why water freezes in patterns, why some puddles are thick and others aren't, what snow is best for building, what is the best way to warm up cold hands and bodies (Always hot chocolate!). And we do this without any lectures or powerpoints or sitting still (though we might often look things up on the computer later!), and guaranteed it will be remembered because of the fun that we had doing it. I've added links to some of our more complicated snow activities at the bottom of the page but here are some pictures of the fun!!
